So you are a phenomenal singer, you can blow the roof off! Or you’re a charismatic dancer that “wows” everyone that has the honor to see you perform. Entertainers encompass more than just dancers and singer, it also includes the talents of announcers, presenter, MCs, DJs, fashion, theatre/radio personalities, and actors. Whatever your talent or form of entertainment may be, there is always another side to this coin and that is the business side. Most entertainers know that they want to be successful and make tons of money, but few know the mechanics of business that oil the machine of their success.
You’re A Walking-Talking Business

By definition a business (according to Merriam-Webster) is:

  • the activity of making, buying, or selling goods or providing services in exchange for money
  • work that is part of a job
  • the amount of activity that is done by a store, company, factory, etc.

You, as an entertainer, provide a service to the masses: Entertainment. And it is one of the most lucrative businesses in the world. In the entertainment world, you will come across contracts, proposals, royalty percentages, branding, advertising, marketing, expenses, and much more. You do not need an MBA from Harvard to be a successful entertainer, however, a lack in business savvy will leave you vulnerable to a variety of unsavory events that may include monies being mismanaged, underpayment, or even YOU owing money in the end.
Times are Changing
The times have evolved from managers playing the liaison between record companies and artists. Due to the advancements in technology and access to the world through the internet, artists are now forging success without record deals. Managers are now sharpening their brand development skills to mold entertainers into international superstars.

Take some time to invest in educating yourself on the business side of entertainment; it will be one of the most important investments you can make as an artist. One where you could walk blindly into a deal and become a victim or one where you are educated and emerge a mogul.
